GI ELECTIVE
Goal:
To expose the resident to common in and outpatient problems of gastroenterology
in children from infancy through late adolescence. This will
be achieved by hands on patient-oriented teaching with attending
supervision. During the elective, Residents rotating through
pediatric gastroenterology can expect to spend four to five half
days per week in the hospital seeing patients, participating in
their care and evaluation, seeing consultations and witnessing endoscopies.
They can also expect to spend five or more half days per week in
the outpatient setting with one of the attending physicians seeing
outpatient consultations for a variety of problems.

Directions: From the
beltway (I-495) take Exit 8 (Route 50 West). Take the second
right on Javier Road. Gastroenterology Associates office is
on the right hand side of the street.
Hints & Expectations:
Elective includes time in
outpatient office, in hospital rounds, and observing procedures
(ie., endoscopy, colonoscopy, etc).
They have offices in Fairfax, Fair Oaks, Herndon, and Shady Grove
(different attendings spend different amounts of time in each).
Be sure to arrange which office you will be seeing patients in (primarily
you will be at Fairfax office most likely) as well as the times
to be there. Directions to the other office sites are located
in the Resident Resource Room file cabinet.
